UNILAG Student Portal Says Invalid Matric Number for Freshers? Why It Happens & How to Fix It

Are you a new UNILAG fresher and your UNILAG student portal says invalid matric number? You just got admission, you want to login to pay acceptance fee or do bio-data, but portal keeps saying "Invalid Matric Number / JAMB Number"?

Don't panic. Your admission is still safe. This happens to almost every UNILAG fresher every year. I know because just yesterday, a girl from Surulere who got admission for Medicine called me almost crying. She thought UNILAG has withdrawn her admission. I checked her details and told her what to do, and within 2 hours her portal opened. Let me explain why it happens and how to fix it fast.

Quick Answer: UNILAG student portal says invalid matric number for freshers because your matric number has not been generated yet, or you are logging in with wrong portal. For freshers, you should login with your JAMB Reg Number or Application Number, not Matric Number. Use studentportal.unilag.edu.ng for freshers screening, not the returning students portal. Also, UNILAG only activates freshers portal 1-2 weeks after you accept admission on JAMB CAPS and pay acceptance fee. If you try too early, it will say invalid. Wait, use correct format, and clear cache.
Why UNILAG Student Portal Says Invalid Matric Number For Freshers

Why UNILAG Portal Says Invalid Matric Number For Freshers

Let me explain this well because many freshers don't know how UNILAG portal works. In UNILAG, you don't get matric number immediately after admission. Matric number comes after you finish all clearance.

1. Your Matric Number Has Not Been Created Yet
This is the main reason. When you are newly admitted, UNILAG has not given you matric number. Matric number is given after you pay acceptance fee, do screening, and register courses. So if you try to login with matric number now, it will say invalid because it does not exist yet. For freshers, you are supposed to use JAMB reg number first. This is why UNN portal also confuses students - they try wrong login details.

2. You Are Using Wrong Portal Link
UNILAG has 2 portals. One for freshers screening, one for returning students. If you are a fresher and you go to returning students portal (unilag.edu.ng student portal login for old students), it will say invalid matric number. Freshers portal is different. Many students Google "UNILAG portal" and Google shows old portal link. That old portal does not have fresher data.

3. You Typed Matric Number in Wrong Format
UNILAG matric number format is like 23001234 or 22/01234. Some students type UNILAG/2023/01234 or add space. Or they type JAMB number in matric field. The portal is very sensitive. One wrong slash or space, it will say invalid. Same thing happens when FUTA portal says invalid credentials after changing password - small format error causes big problem.

4. UNILAG Has Not Uploaded Your Data Yet
UNILAG ICT uploads freshers data in batches. If your name is in Batch C and they have only uploaded Batch A and B, your details won't be in portal yet. So it will say invalid. This happens especially for those who got admission late or supplementary list. You have to wait for your batch to be uploaded.

5. You Have Not Accepted Admission on JAMB CAPS
If you have not clicked "Accept" on JAMB CAPS, UNILAG will not activate your portal. UNILAG only gets your name from JAMB after you accept. Many freshers forget to accept on CAPS. So portal will say invalid because UNILAG has not received your acceptance.

Matric Number vs JAMB Number vs Application Number in UNILAG

This part is important. Many freshers mix them up.

JAMB Reg Number: This is your 2025/2026 JAMB number like 202512345678AB. For UNILAG freshers, this is what you use as username for first login on screening portal. Not matric.

Application Number: This is your UNILAG post-UTME application number like UNILAG/2025/12345. Some departments use this for screening login.

Matric Number: This is your official UNILAG number like 230110001. You only get this AFTER you pay acceptance fee and do physical clearance at Akoka. You cannot use it before that.

Common Mistake: Freshers go to portal and select "Matric Number" in login option, then type JAMB number. It will fail. You must select "JAMB Reg Number" or "Application Number" as login type if you are fresher. Look well before you type.

How to Fix Invalid Matric Number Error in UNILAG (5 Working Methods)

Method 1: Use JAMB Reg Number, Not Matric Number (For Freshers)

  1. Go to correct freshers portal: https://studentportal.unilag.edu.ng or https://applications.unilag.edu.ng - this is the new students portal
  2. On login page, you will see options like "Login with JAMB Number" or "Login with Application Number". Click that, don't click "Matric Number"
  3. Type your JAMB reg number in CAPITAL letters, no space. Example: 202512345678AB
  4. For password, use your surname (small letters) or JAMB number as password - UNILAG sometimes uses surname as default password for freshers. Try your surname first
  5. Click Login. It should open your bio-data page

This method fixes 80% of freshers. I told 4 freshers this yesterday and all of them were able to login.

Method 2: Check If Your Data Has Been Uploaded

  1. Go to UNILAG main site www.unilag.edu.ng, check news section. They usually post "Batch A freshers screening has commenced"
  2. Check your department WhatsApp group. Ask if other freshers in your department can login. If nobody can login, it means UNILAG has not uploaded your department yet
  3. If you are supplementary list or DE, your upload comes 2 weeks after merit list. So wait
  4. Make sure you have accepted admission on JAMB CAPS and printed your JAMB admission letter. If you have not accepted, go and accept first, then wait 48 hours for UNILAG to get it
  5. Also confirm you have generated your profile code correctly, because sometimes portal problem starts from forgot password issues like this UNIBEN case when JAMB details don't match
UNILAG fresher login with JAMB Reg Number instead of matric number

Method 3: Clear Cache and Use Correct Format

  1. Open Chrome browser (not Opera Mini), click 3 dots, turn on Desktop site
  2. Go to Settings > Privacy and security > Clear browsing data > All time > Clear cache
  3. Now type your details carefully: No space before or after JAMB number, no lowercase if they ask capital, no hyphen
  4. If your JAMB number is 2025-123-456, try without hyphen: 2025123456. UNILAG portal does not like hyphen
  5. Try both JAMB number and Application number - sometimes one works, one does not
I tested this myself last admission year. I typed a fresher's JAMB number with small letter and it said invalid. When I typed same number with CAPITAL letter, it opened immediately. So format matters.

Method 4: Pay Acceptance Fee First, Then Try Again

  1. For UNILAG, you cannot access student portal fully until you pay acceptance fee
  2. Generate acceptance fee invoice from UNILAG payment portal, pay via Remita
  3. After paying, wait 24 hours for payment to reflect. UNILAG ICT needs to confirm your payment
  4. Then go back to student portal and login with JAMB number again. This time it should show "Matric Number Generated"
  5. Your matric number will now appear on your screening form. Copy it and save it
  6. If after paying acceptance fee, your payment is not showing, check this guide on LASU payment not showing after paying with ATM - same fix works for UNILAG, wait and check Remita receipt

Method 5: Visit UNILAG ICT or Academic Affairs

  1. If you tried all and it still says invalid, go to UNILAG ICT at Akoka, 2nd floor, near Senate building
  2. Go with your JAMB original result, UNILAG admission letter, O'level result, and acceptance fee receipt
  3. Tell them "My portal says invalid matric number for fresher". They will check your data in their system
  4. Sometimes your name is there but with wrong JAMB number (like one digit missing). They will correct it there
  5. If you cannot go physically, email them at ict@unilag.edu.ng or send message to UNILAG official Facebook page. Include your full name, JAMB number, department

What to Do If It Still Says Invalid After Trying

If after Method 1 to 5 it still says invalid, do this quick checklist:

  • Are you sure you are admitted? Check JAMB CAPS again. If CAPS says "Admission in Progress" not "Admitted", UNILAG has not given you admission yet
  • Did you do UNILAG post-UTME screening? If you did not do screening, your data won't be in portal
  • Is your O'level uploaded on JAMB CAPS? UNILAG won't activate portal if O'level not uploaded
  • Are you using DE? DE students get matric number much later, sometimes 1 month after UTME freshers. So be patient
  • Try laptop instead of phone. Sometimes phone browser causes error even with correct details
Don't Pay Anyone: If someone on WhatsApp says "I can fix invalid matric number for 5k", it is scam. Fix is free. Go to ICT yourself. I have seen many UNILAG freshers scammed this way.

How to Avoid This Error Next Time

  • As a fresher, always login with JAMB reg number, never matric number until after clearance
  • Save your JAMB number in your phone notes in capital letter, copy and paste to avoid typing error
  • Always use Chrome with Desktop site for UNILAG portal. Don't use Opera Mini
  • Accept admission on JAMB CAPS within 3 days of seeing admission, don't delay
  • Pay acceptance fee early, don't wait till deadline - portal gets overloaded near deadline and says invalid for everyone
  • Join your department fresher WhatsApp group early - you will know when UNILAG uploads batch

FAQs - UNILAG Invalid Matric Number For Freshers

Q1: Why is UNILAG portal saying invalid matric number for me as fresher?
Because you don't have matric number yet. UNILAG only gives matric number after acceptance fee and physical clearance. For freshers, use JAMB reg number or Application number to login, not matric number. Also make sure you are using freshers portal (studentportal.unilag.edu.ng) not returning students portal.
Q2: When will UNILAG give me my matric number?
UNILAG gives matric number 1-3 days after you pay acceptance fee and your payment reflects. You will see it on your screening bio-data form after login. For some departments like Medicine and Law, it takes 1 week. So pay acceptance fee first, then check portal after 24 hours.
Q3: I paid acceptance fee but UNILAG portal still says invalid matric number?
Wait 24-48 hours after payment. UNILAG ICT needs to confirm your payment manually. If after 48 hours it still says invalid, go to ICT with your Remita receipt. They will activate it. Also make sure you are typing JAMB number correctly in capital letters.
Q4: Is UNILAG student portal for freshers different from returning students?
Yes, it is different. Freshers should use https://studentportal.unilag.edu.ng or applications.unilag.edu.ng for screening and bio-data. Returning students use a different login with matric number. If you are fresher and you use returning portal, it will say invalid matric number because your data is not there yet.
Q5: Can I use small letters for JAMB number on UNILAG portal?
No, use capital letters. UNILAG portal is case-sensitive. Type your JAMB number like 202512345678AB not 202512345678ab. Also remove any space or hyphen. One small error will make it say invalid. Copy from your JAMB slip directly.
Q6: My friend can login but I can't, we are same department, why?
Your batch has not been uploaded. UNILAG uploads freshers in batches A, B, C. Your friend may be in Batch A, you may be in Batch B. Or you have not accepted on JAMB CAPS. Check CAPS, accept admission, and wait for your batch. Ask your course adviser when Batch B will be uploaded.

Conclusion

UNILAG student portal saying invalid matric number for freshers is normal. It does not mean UNILAG withdrew your admission.

Remember: As fresher, you don't have matric number yet. Login with JAMB reg number in capital letters, use freshers portal, clear your Chrome cache, and make sure you accepted on JAMB CAPS and paid acceptance fee. Wait 24 hours after payment.

If you follow Method 1 to 5 I explained, your portal will open. If it still doesn't open, go to UNILAG ICT at Akoka with your documents. Don't pay any agent.

Did this guide help you fix your UNILAG invalid matric number error? Let me know in comment which method worked for you. And share this with other UNILAG freshers in your WhatsApp group who are also facing same issue.

JAMB Activates Change of Institution and Course Portal for 2026 Direct Entry Candidates | What You Need to Know

If there is one thing I have learnt from writing about admissions over the years, it is that many students lose admission opportunities because they miss important updates from JAMB. That is one of the reasons I closely monitor admission announcements so I can share verified information with students as early as possible. Today, I have another important update for candidates participating in the 2026 Direct Entry (DE) admission exercise . The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially activated the Change of Institution and Change of Course portal for 2026 Direct Entry candidates. The development comes as several universities, polytechnics and colleges of education begin their 2026/2027 Direct Entry admission and screening exercises . Candidates who wish to change their institution or course can now do so through the official JAMB process. Why This Update Matters From my experience, many Direct Entry applicants initially select an institution or course during JAM...

In this guide, Studentportals.com.ng explains how to accept admission using 55019 , who can use the service, common errors to avoid, and what to do after successfully accepting your admission. Can You Accept Admission Using 55019? Yes. JAMB allows candidates who have already been offered admission to accept their admission thr...
