What Does the Cut Off Mark Mean?

A cut off mark is the minimum score a candidate needs before being considered for admission into a particular course.

For Medicine and Surgery, the cut off mark is much higher because many students compete for very few admission spaces.

Every year, thousands of candidates choose Medicine and Surgery as their first choice at UNIZIK. Since the available spaces are limited, only candidates with outstanding scores are usually admitted.

That is why students should never aim to score just the cut off mark. A higher score always gives a better chance.

Why Is Medicine and Surgery Cut Off Mark So High?

Medicine and Surgery remains one of the most respected courses in Nigeria.

Many students dream of becoming doctors because it is a noble profession that gives them the opportunity to save lives.

Because of this, the competition is always very high.

Some reasons include:

  • Thousands of candidates apply every year.

  • The College of Medicine admits only a limited number of students.

  • Many applicants score very high in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

  • Candidates with stronger O'Level grades usually have an advantage.

  • Admission is based on merit.

UNIZIK General Admission Cut Off Mark

The table below shows the difference between the general university cut off mark and the departmental cut off mark for Medicine and Surgery.

General UNIZIK JAMB Cut Off Mark160

Medicine and Surgery Cut Off Mark
310.5

This shows that the departmental cut off mark for Medicine and Surgery is far higher than the university's general admission benchmark.

Can I Study Medicine and Surgery with 250?

No.

A score of 250 is usually not competitive enough for Medicine and Surgery at UNIZIK.

Although it is a good Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination score for many courses, Medicine and Surgery requires a much higher score because of the intense competition.

If your score is around 250, you may consider changing to another science course with a lower admission requirement.

Can I Study Medicine and Surgery with 280?

A score of 280 is impressive.

However, it is still below the expected departmental cut off mark of 310.5.

Candidates with this score should be prepared to consider other health-related courses if admission into Medicine and Surgery becomes difficult.

Is 300 Enough?

A score of 300 is excellent.

Many universities in Nigeria would consider it very competitive.

However, for Medicine and Surgery at UNIZIK, it is still slightly below the expected cut off mark.

If your score is around 300, your chances may depend on other admission factors and available spaces.

Is 320 a Good Score?

Yes.

A Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination score of 320 places a candidate in a strong position.

Although admission can never be guaranteed, candidates with scores above the departmental cut off mark usually have better chances during the admission process.

O'Level Requirements for Medicine and Surgery

Candidates must have at least five credit passes in relevant subjects.
