There was loud ovation, joy and gratitude on Friday as Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti (OFR), addressed newly deployed NYSC Batch A Stream 1 corps members at the opening ceremony of the 2026 orientation course in the state.
The excitement followed the governor’s bold announcement of an increase in the state allowance for corps members to ₦30,000, in addition to the ₦77,000 monthly allowance paid by the Federal Government. Governor Otti also reaffirmed his administration’s strong commitment to the full rehabilitation of facilities at the NYSC orientation camp.
Addressing the corps members, Governor Otti assured them of their safety, welfare and overall well-being, describing Abia State as a “second home.” He said his government had put strong structures in place to ensure that their service year would be secure, rewarding and enjoyable as they settle into their various host communities.
The governor urged the youths to serve with purpose, discipline and dedication, warning that anyone who fails to make good use of the NYSC year would be shortchanging themselves. According to him, the scheme provides rare opportunities for personal growth, valuable life lessons, professional connections and career development.
Governor Otti further charged the corps members to be diligent and impactful at their places of primary assignment, stressing that excellence, patriotism and hard work would not only contribute to the development of “God’s Own State” but also position them for future success. He disclosed that the second phase of the renovation of the NYSC orientation camp would commence soon, with the Chairman of the Abia State NYSC Governing Board, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, driving the process.
Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development and Chairman of the NYSC Board, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, advised the corps members to obey all rules and regulations of the scheme and to uphold the oath of allegiance they had taken as a commitment to selfless national service. He added that Abia State consistently rewards corps members who carry out impactful community development projects.
Also speaking, the Abia State NYSC Coordinator, Barrister Gladys Adama, expressed deep appreciation to Governor Otti for his transformational interventions at the orientation camp. She highlighted projects such as the installation of solar-powered street lights, construction of internal roads and major renovations of camp facilities. She, however, appealed for additional support to complete the camp rehabilitation, relocate the uninhabitable state NYSC secretariat on Finbarrs’ Road, and provide operational vehicles including a coaster bus and an ambulance.
The corps members were formally sworn in by Hon. Justice E. C. Anyim, representing the Chief Judge of Abia State, Hon. Justice Lilian Abai, marking the official commencement of the 2026 orientation course amid high morale and renewed enthusiasm.
With improved welfare, better facilities and strong government support, Abia State is fast becoming a top choice destination for corps members across the country.
