The Nigeria government through the minister of education has announced the commencement of a new N50 million funding initiative called STEMM Up Grant. The initiative which is set to officially launch on August 28 is targeted at full-time undergraduate students in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions


What Is STEMM Up Grant?


STEMM Up grant is a Nigeria Federal Government Student Venture Capital Grant (S-VCG) targeted at full-time undergraduate students in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions studying Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medical Sciences (STEMM). 

The initiative is designed to empower student-led projects with up to N50 million in startup funding, along with access to mentorship, incubation services, and business development support to help scale the ventures and address real-world challenges.


The programme, officially known as the Sciences, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medical Sciences Student Venture Capital Grant (SVCG), is being implemented in partnership with the Nigeria Bank of Industry to ensure transparency, accountability, and measurable results.


Who Is Eligible for STEMM Up Grant?


The STEMM Up grant, when officially launched, will be open to undergraduate students especially those in level 300 and above who have fundable initiatives under the Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medical Sciences fields.


How Much Funding Will STEMM Up Grant Beneficiaries Receive?

According to a post from the Honourable Minister of Education Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, made on twitter(now known as x) , each outstanding innovator through this initiative will be provided with up to N50 million in startup capital. 

Requirements for STEMM Up Grant

The official requirements for the STEMM Up Grant application have not been released however, from the statement released by the minister of education, here are few takeaways;

  • Applicant must be a Nigerian student studying a STEMM course
  • Applicant should be in level 300 and above(special interest will be given to these set of students however, those in level 200 maybe allowed to apply
  • Applicant must have an innovative and fundable idea
  • Your idea must be marketable with the ability to employ other Nigerians 
  • You must have various documents to proof you are a student and also provide a departmental ID or other acceptable proof of department

How to Apply

Interested Nigerians who meet the above requirements and criteria will be able to submit their application online as soon as the application portal is announced. The announcement is expected to be made on or before August 28. This STEMM Up Grant is expected to boost youth-driven innovation, reduce graduate unemployment, and position Nigeria as a continental hub for student entrepreneurship.
